Why use Paper Tree Guards?
Paper Tree Guards are biodegradable eco-friendly vine guards and are now available in the UK. They provide vineyard owners with a sustainable way to protect valuable young vines whilst reducing their impact on the environment. Paper Tree Guards are made from sustainably-managed forests and can be composted after use or used as a mulch on the vineyard. The costs of retrieval and disposal associated with plastic guards are removed and your green credentials can be established with this product.
The National Association for the English and Welsh Wine Industry, WineGB, has recently established an Environmental Sustainability Workgroup, led by Chris Foss. This move reflects the industry’s increasing focus on sustainability in all stages of wine production from sourcing ethical products, packaging materials and reducing the impact of the industry on our environment.
The reduction, or elimination of polluting plastics from the supply chain is a focus for many growers. Until now there has been no alternative to plastic guards for protecting young vines. Plastic guards consume fossil fuels in their production and are not generally recyclable however they persist in the environment. As a result, they do decay, this results in micro-particles of plastic that can enter our water courses and ultimately the world’s food chains.
